WHYP 1530 AM & 101 FM was truly a one-of-a-kind classic in modern broadcasting-

This station was located right next to major railroad tracks outside of Erie, Pa in the town of North East. WHYP originally began broadcasting around 1966 on AM 1530 as a country music daytimer ("daytimer" means when the sun goes down, so does your radio station). Early WHYP featured Pete Rivers & other "Whyperoos" (the dj's) and a popular morning drive show called " Giddy Up N' Go".

Somewhere between that time and these 1984 air checks, it morphed...to a AM/FM MONO one man simulcast operation with a random "commentary / country music / Sousa march / occasional dead air" format! Owner James Brownyard inadvertently became one of the earliest talk format guys and he didn't hold back...speaking the words a lot of people were thinking!

While I was visiting my parents in North East in the spring of 1984, I captured most of these great sound bites on my portable blaster all in one day! Since this went on every day for years, there must be some more great material languishing on an old cassette somewhere! Whether you remember this great station or not, you'll be entertained. Feel free to re-distribute these in any way!

Low Flying Helicopter: "We have a low flying helicopter"... the mic is cut for about 15 seconds, followed by "Ok, he's passed over". This type of  interruption for trains, passing aircraft, thunder claps , etc was  not uncommon. WHYP_Low Flying Helicopter
